EXTENSION ITINERARY:
Friday, March 17 – Travel to Takoradi + Elmina Castle Visit
After breakfast, depart for a quick flight to Takoradi. Here you will get the chance to visit Elmina, a picturesque fishing town, Elmina Castle, a UNESCO world heritage side, and have lunch at the Queen Mother’s Residence.
Elmina Castle was built in 1482 by Portuguese traders and was the first European slave-trading post in all of sub-saharan Africa. It was originally built to protect the gold trade but in 1637 it was captured by the Dutch and came to serve the Dutch slave trade with Brazil and the Caribbean. In the 1800s the castle came under British ownership. Today, Elimna’s economy is sustained by tourism and fishing. Elmina Castle is preserved as a Ghanaian national museum and monument and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
Overnight: Ridge Royal Hotel (Cape Coast)
Saturday, March 18 – Kakum National Park + Return to Accra for International Departures
Today, you will get the chance to visit Kakum National Park before you depart back to Accra for your international flights home.
Kakum National Park is 145 sq miles of tropical forest that was established in 1931 as a reserve and became a national park in 1992. It is home to the Diana monkey, giant bongo antelope, yellow-backed duiker, and the African elephant. Kakum National Park is one of only three locations in Africa that has a canopy walk that connects seven trees. A truly fascinating way to experience the forest!
