RARE to the Reef: Site Visit to Honduras
May 2 – 7, 2023
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS:
International flights are booked independently by travelers. The main program begins with a chartered flight at 3:00 pm from San Pedro Sula Airport (SAP) on Tuesday, May 2 and ends with a chartered flight to San Pedro Sula Airport arriving at 9:30 am on Sunday, May 7.
Check in for the charter flights should be done at least one-hour prior to departure and the counter will be open two hours before. Therefore, there won’t be much free time in between your international flight and chartered flight on May 2nd. You should have just enough time to pass through customs and immigration and grab some coffee or a bite to eat at the food court, before clearing security and proceeding to the waiting area.
Please book your flights based on the following schedule:
- Tuesday, May 2, 2023: Arrive at San Pedro Sula Airport before 12:15 pm local time (Central Standard Time, GMT -6)
- There are not many flights to Honduras from the U.S., so we recommend taking the following international flights:
- United Airlines 1487 – Departs IAH at 9:45 am, arrival in SAP 11:35 am CST
- American Airlines 559 – Departs MIA at 11:41 am, arrival at SAP 12:08 pm CST

Please note: Some originating flights may require you to travel a day prior to the trip starting. For example, you might want to fly to IAH or MIA the day before (May 1) to catch the morning flight on May 2nd. Or you might choose to fly to San Pedro Sula the day prior so that you can make our charter flights on May 2, which departs starting at 3:00 pm local time from San Pedro Sula. If you would like help with any of these additional accommodations, please let Yumi (yumi@elevatedestinations.com) know.
If you would like assistance booking your flights, please contact Yumi (yumi@elevatedestinations.com) to introduce you with a flight booking specialist.
We would be happy to help you extend your travels in the region, before or after the main program. Please see the Extend Your Travel tab for more information and make a note in the registration form if you are interested in looking into this further.
TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE:
Rare is providing basic medical coverage for all attendees through BlueCross BlueShield GeoBlue. Please find the supporting documents below:
While not required, Elevate Destinations strongly recommend that travelers purchase insurance with Cancel for Any Reason level coverage. Please note that all Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance policies are time sensitive and require purchase within 1 to 21 days of making a payment for your trip. CFAR provides more robust coverage for any unexpected trip cancellations or delays.
Below are two insurance brokers that Elevate Destinations recommends:
1. Yonder Insurance – You are welcome to purchase travel insurance through our partners at Yonder Travel Insurance. You can contact Yonder at hello@insureyonder.com or call at 855-358-6433 (Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM CT).
2. Travel Insurance Center – Dan Drennen is the representative who Elevate Destinations works with. To inquire with Dan about insurance policies he offers, you can reach him by email at dan@travelinsurancecenter.com or over the phone at 1-866-979-6753 (extension 3621).

Please note that the last two amendment pages are not acceptable for visas and immigration stamps.
VISA:
U.S. Citizens do not need a visa to visit Honduras for Business or Tourism. If you are not a U.S. Citizen, please contact Yumi@elevatedestinations.com for assistance with visas.
