ITINERARY:
Day 1: Tuesday, May 2, 2023 – International Arrivals
Hola! Today you will arrive in San Pedro Sula Airport (SAP) by 12:00pm local time and fly as a group on a chartered flight directly to the island of Guanaja. Your chartered flight is scheduled to depart at 3:00pm local time.
You will stay at Graham’s Place, a boutique Caribbean resort on an unspoiled, 7-acre private island paradise, a short boat ride away from the main island of Guanaja, one of Fish Forever’s first partner communities in Honduras. In the evening, convene for a Welcome Dinner with local partners and staff.
Overnight: Graham’s Place
Day 2: Wednesday, May 3, 2023 – Guanaja
After breakfast at the hotel, take in the beauty of the ocean habitat above and below the water. Wade off the shore with your fly rod to some of the north coast’s best flyfishing flats. Hop on a kayak to paddle around the island. Grab a snorkel and fins or suit up for a SCUBA dive on the coral reefs – part of the world’s second biggest barrier reef, which stretches north to Mexico. This area lures divers, snorkelers, anglers, and nature enthusiasts seeking to experience the calm and the ecological bounty of the Mesoamerican Reef’s biodiversity.
In the afternoon, transfer by boat to The Cay, where most of Guanaja’s approximately 6,000 residents live and where you will engage with Rare’s partners. We will spend most of the afternoon meeting with fishers, learning from the community about their implementation of Fish Forever and its impact to-date. Travelers will have a better understanding of the investments to restore, protect, and manage Honduras’ vital marine habitats and secure the livelihoods of coastal fishers and their families.
Overnight: Graham’s Place
Day 3: Thursday, May 4th – Transfer to Trujillo
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, more aquatic recreation, and additional visits with Rare’s partners and the Guanaja community members.
Check out of Graham’s Place, then transfer by boat to the mainland city of Trujillo, arriving to the hotel before convening for a group dinner.
Overnight: Hotel Christopher Columbus
Day 4: Friday, May 5th – Santa Fe
After breakfast, drive to Santa Fe to meet with Rare’s partners. Here we will visit another community implementing Fish Forever and see firsthand how its core elements, including community-led management, targeted behavior change, savings clubs, Pride campaigns, and financial literacy contribute to revitalizing small-scale fisheries and the communities who depend on them.
The afternoon will include a local lunch, a colorful (and musical!) visit with the Garifuna community in Santa Fe, and a beach bonfire as the sun sets.
Overnight: Hotel Christopher Columbus
Day 5: Saturday, May 6, 2023 – La Ceiba
Today will continue learning and connecting with local communities, including if we are lucky, with a children’s savings club! Compete to win first place in the newest edition of Rare Olympics. In the early afternoon, we will depart Santa Fe for a 4-hour drive along the coast to La Ceiba, the fourth-largest city in Honduras and the Atlántida state capital.
In the evening, come together for a special Farewell Dinner to close out our journey together.
Overnight: Hotel Quinta Real
Day 6: Sunday May 7, 2023 – Farewell / International Departures
At 7:00 AM, transfer to the airport for a chartered flight to San Pedro Sula (SAP), departing at 8:30 AM and arriving at 9:30 AM to connect with your international flight back home. Please check the flight guidance regarding what time to book your flight home.
