Journey to Tanzania
August 10 – 18, 2023
Join Together Women Rise in Tanzania—one of the most beloved and enchanting safari destinations in the world. Far more than just a place to see the ‘Big Five’ and the wildebeest migration, Tanzania offers a wealth of hospitality and the opportunity for cross-cultural exchange. Experience Tanzania’s natural beauty, and connect with Tanzanian women and girls who Together Women Rise supports.
On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, Together Women Rise highlights the work of two incredible grantees: Secondary Education for Girls Advancement (SEGA) and African People & Wildlife (APW). The SEGA Girls School is a residential secondary school for girls who otherwise are unable to attend school due to extreme poverty. African People & Wildlife is a grassroots, community-based conservation organization in the Maasai Steppe of northern Tanzania. APW’s living walls, student scholarships, and business enterprise projects provide household income security for the present generation of Maasai women and girls and the next.
Your experience will be incredibly immersive as you engage with each grantee for up-close experiences with these amazing organizations. Please join us!
Itinerary
Day 1: Thursday, August 10
Arrival in Dar es Salaam
Arrive in Dar es Salaam at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Dar es Salaam (Dar) means “the house of peace” in Arabic. Despite this meaning, you’ll find that the former capital is actually the most populated and the busiest city in Tanzania!
Once you’ve proceeded through Immigration & Customs and baggage claim, you will be picked up by your driver and driven straight to your hotel where you can relax and unwind before dinner.
Enjoy a welcome dinner, then rest up before continuing your journey.
Overnight: Hotel Slipway (Dar es Salaam)
Day 2: Friday, August 11
Drive to SEGA Girls School, Morogoro
After breakfast, depart for the SEGA Girls School in Morogoro — approximately a 4.5-hour drive.
The SEGA Girls School is partnered with Nurturing Minds, a U.S.- based nonprofit organization whose focus is to support quality education, life skills, and entrepreneurship to help vulnerable girls in Tanzania become leaders in their communities. During the visit to SEGA, the group will be immersed in the school’s community and culture by staying on campus in the SEGA Lodge.
In the evenings during your stay at SEGA, you can relax and enjoy a delicious local Tanzanian dinner at SEGA Lodge.
Overnight: SEGA Lodge
Days 3-4: Saturday, August 12, Sunday, August 13
SEGA Girls School & Surrounding Sites
Over the next two days at SEGA, Together Women Rise travelers will have the unique opportunity to interact with SEGA girls. Because you will be visiting on the weekend, the girls will not be in class and will be around during the day to lead you on a tour of SEGA’s vibrant campus, play card games, have a soccer match, or lead netball lessons. Other activities with SEGA students may include Tanzanian cooking and Swahili lessons, traditional dance performances, or art projects. When not with students, Together Women Rise members can enjoy other unique experiences, such as a hike in the Uluguru Mountains and a tour of a local market.
Overnight: SEGA Lodge
Day 5: Monday, August 14
APOPO Visit & Return to Dar es Salaam
In the morning, travelers will have the opportunity to visit the incredible APOPO Rat Project— hero rats trained to detect land mines and catch tuberculosis in patients before it spreads. After returning to the SEGA Lodge for breakfast, the group will bid farewell to SEGA students and faculty before driving back to Dar for the evening. You will be able to relax at the hotel and enjoy a group dinner. For those who would like to have an independent dinner, this is a great night to enjoy personal downtime. If you do not join the group for dinner, the meal is at your own expense.
Overnight: Hotel Slipway (Dar es Salaam)
Day 6: Tuesday, August 15
Travel to Tarangire National Park via Arusha
After an early breakfast, the group will head to the airport for a morning flight to Arusha.
Upon your arrival in Arusha, you’ll be picked up by a driver who will take you to Arusha Coffee Lodge for a relaxing lunch before driving to Tarangire National Park — about a 2-hour drive from Arusha.
Enjoy a relaxing dinner at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge, right in the middle of the National Park. You will be surrounded by Tarangire’s stunningly vast landscape and majestic wildlife.
Overnight: Tarangire Sopa Lodge
Day 7: Wednesday, August 16
Game Drives & Relaxation
Depart the lodge early in the morning for your first full day of safari in Tarangire National Park, famous for its high density of elephants and ancient baobab trees. Return to the lodge to relax between early morning and afternoon game drives when the animals retreat into the bush to escape the midday heat. Travelers visiting the park during the dry season (June – November) can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest, and Cape buffalo. Home to more than 550 bird species, the park is also a haven for bird enthusiasts.
Return to the lodge in the late afternoon to relax before dinner.

Day 8: Thursday, August 17
APW Site Visits and Game Drive
Enjoy an early breakfast before heading out on a morning game drive that will take you all the way to African People & Wildlife Headquarters, Noloholo. Once you arrive at Noloholo, you will be invited to learn more about the APW model. Understand the depth of their community relationships, and learn how their model works to empower rural Africans to manage their natural resources. You will have time to connect with the women who have benefited from Together Women Rise’s grant and explore the enterprises that support the livelihood of these incredible people.
After a full day at APW, return to the Sopa Lodge, with a game drive along the way. Enjoy another relaxing evening in the tranquility of Tarangire.
