Day 2: August 12, Thorsmork Wilderness Area
Today we’ll travel to the wilderness area known as Thorsmork, or Thor’s Forest, on the north side of Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. It is here that the effects of the volcanic eruption of 2010 are most clearly visible: hills covered with ash, flood debris scattered across the valley floor, steam rising from tunnels in Gigjokull glacier. First we’ll stop at beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the waterfall. Along the way, your guide will offer an overview of the geology in Iceland and its history and culture. Hike across otherworldly landscape leading to the site where floodwaters gushed out from under the glacier during the eruption of April and May, 2010. Later in the day, and depending on conditions, we’ll either hike up to one of many viewpoints in the area or explore one of the countless gullies and ravines that dissect the north face of the volcano. Lunch will be a picnic today. Dinner will be on your own tonight.

Day 3: August 13, Blue Lagoon & Birthday Celebration
This morning, visit the world-famous Blue Lagoon Spa. Enjoy a relaxing swim in the warm aqua-blue waters renowned for their healing powers, followed by lunch. This is the perfect way to relax before heading back to Reykjavík for Lynda’s birthday celebration!
At 5:00 PM, your guide will meet you at your hotel and take you for a short walk to Reykjavík Harbor where you will board a ferry for Videy Island, which sits just off the coast of Reykjavik. Once on shore, after a 15-minute sail, you will be greeted by a curator from the Reykjavik Art Museum, who will take you on a short walking tour of the island and provide an overview of two of its best known art works: Richard Serra’s Áfangar (Standing Stones) and Yoko Ono´s Imagine Peace Tower. This will be followed by Lynda’s birthday dinner party in Viðey House – one of Iceland’s oldest buildings, dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. Return by ferry to Reykjavik Harbor between 10:00 and 11:00 PM.
