Day 2
Transfer to Wilpattu
After a leisurely breakfast, meet your driver and transfer to Wilpattu National Park. The drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours. Upon arrival, savor a tasty lunch before heading out on your first safari drive, which will last until dusk! In the evening, enjoy an al fresco dinner at camp.
Spanning 508 square miles, Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest National Park. As you drive through the densely forested park, you'll notice many sand-rimmed natural lakes called 'Villus.' Because Villus collects rainwater, they are a favorite gathering spot for the National Park's fauna, especially during droughts. Throughout your time in the park, keep a close lookout for leopards lurking amid the vegetation. You may also spot Sri Lankan sloth bears, a highly threatened subspecies of the sloth bear, feasting on ants and termites. Other animals that call Wilpattu home include Asian elephants, deer, wild boars, water buffalo, and Mugger crocodiles.
Overnight Leopard Trails, Wilpattu

Day 3
Wilpattu National Park
Depart camp early this morning for a full-day safari adventure. Wildlife is often most active at dawn and dusk, so an early start gives you the best chance to spot animals as they begin their day. In addition to the over 30 recorded mammalian species inside the Park, there's also a wide array of wetland bird species, including the Pin-Tailed Snipe, Lesser Whistling Teal Duck, Spoonbill, and White Ibis. Spend the full day exploring with your expert guide.
In the evening, return to camp for another delightful dinner around the campfire and a nightcap under the stars. Listen to the rhythmic sounds of nocturnal animals and insects as you relax in your deluxe tent.
Overnight Leopard Trails, Wilpattu
Day 4
Sigiriya
Following breakfast, embark on a scenic 3.5-hour drive to Sigiriya. Check in at Water Garden, your home for the next two nights. Set among landscaped gardens and tranquil waterways, the hotel offers a peaceful retreat with views toward Sigiriya Rock in the distance. You'll have time to unwind in your deluxe villa, complete with a private deck that hovers just above the serene lakes and streams running through the property.
In the afternoon, you'll visit the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of Sri Lanka's most remarkable architectural wonders. Rising nearly 700 feet above lush gardens, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in the 5th century by King Kasyapa as a fortress-palace. Steeped in legend, the dramatic rock tells the story of feuding dynasties, daring plots, and a throne claimed through ambition and betrayal. With your guide, explore its ancient ruins, frescoes, and panoramic views from the summit, then return to your hotel.

Day 5
Polonnaruwa and Minneriya National Park
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Site. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka's capital between the 10th and 12th centuries AD, and its ruins offer a well-preserved glimpse into the island's golden age. With your guide, visit the Royal Palace Complex, including the King's Palace and Audience Hall, the Quadrangle, and Gal Vihara, where four Buddha statues were carved from a single granite rock. Witness Hindu influences in the Shiva Temples and statues of Hindu deities, alongside Buddhist landmarks such as Lankatilaka, Watadage, Galpotha, the Lotus Bath, the Kiri Vihara Dagoba, and remnants of the former Temple of the Tooth.
After exploring Polonnaruwa, visit Priyamali Gedara, a charming local farmer's home transformed into a traditional restaurant overlooking serene paddy fields. Here, you'll enjoy a cooking demonstration and even help prepare your own lunch!
Next, visit Minneriya National Park for an afternoon safari. The Park, located in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone, is centered around the historic Minneriya Reservoir, the largest of 16 reservoirs built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena. The Park is especially famous for the Elephant Gathering, one of the world's most incredible wildlife spectacles. During the dry months, nearly 300 elephants from surrounding areas congregate around the reservoir in search of water, creating an unforgettable natural display.

Day 6
Transfer to Wasgamuwa
After breakfast, leave the Cultural Triangle behind and travel toward the remote wilderness of Wasgamuwa, where you will begin a unique conservation experience with the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society. This organization takes a unique approach to wildlife conservation by actively involving local communities in every part of its work. You'll spend four nights volunteering here and learning more about the 14+ ongoing conservation projects.
Set within a region where wildlife and rural communities coexist, this immersive stay will provide an important perspective on the delicate balance between people and nature, particularly the ongoing efforts to support the coexistence of elephants and local communities.
Upon arrival at your lodge, you'll be welcomed by the resident conservation team and escorted to your accommodation. While simple in design, the rooms are thoughtfully arranged with modern comforts, including air-conditioning and attached bathrooms. Take time to settle in. Then, meet with your hosts for an introductory briefing, where you will gain an understanding of the work being carried out, the challenges faced on the ground, and the role you will play over the coming days.

Day 7 - 9
Volunteer Work at SLWCS
Over the next few days, you will be fully immersed in this meaningful conservation experience, living and working within a region that forms part of the natural habitat of Sri Lanka's endangered Asian Elephant. Guided by experienced conservationists and researchers, your days will unfold in the field, giving you a hands-on understanding of the complex relationship between wildlife and the surrounding rural communities.
Each day will bring different perspectives and opportunities to engage. You may find yourself quietly observing elephant movements at dawn, assisting with wildlife monitoring that extends beyond elephants to include birds, butterflies, and other species, or contributing to field surveys that help researchers better understand movement and habitat-use patterns. An equally important part of your experience lies within the surrounding villages. Spend time with local communities, gaining insight into their way of life and the challenges they face living alongside wildlife. Through carefully designed initiatives, you'll witness how conservation and community development go hand in hand - from sustainable livelihood projects to environmental education and outreach programs aimed at fostering coexistence.
