  • Nakabusa Onsen Trailhead to Enzanso Hut

From Matsumoto city, it is about a one-hour drive to the trailhead of Akabusa Onsen. We may stop by the Daio Wasabi farm and enjoy a wasabi soft serve ice cream! There's also a short scenic river trip as an option.

At Nakabusa Onsen, there are facilities and water. (And onsen of course.) From the trailhead, it is a 5km steep ascent through the forest up to the Gassen Hut for a rest, followed by another 2 km along a lower incline up to the ridge and alpine area. In total, it is about 1,200m elevation gain to the Enzanso Hut on a well-maintained trail.

Leave Matsumoto early in the morning to arrive to Enzanso by lunchtime. Following lunch, enjoy an out and back hike to the nearby Mt. Tsubakuro for incredible views.

  • Jonen Hut

A Japanese-style breakfast is served from 5:00 AM. Japanese hikers depart early to allow for plenty of time to reach the next destination by midday. Over the peak summer months in Japan, afternoon thunderstorms are common. We'll depart for the Jonen Hut just before 6:00 AM. The ridgeline hike is a moderate undulating trail for about 10 kms finishing with a steep descent down to the Jonen Hut.

We'll stop at the Daitenso Hut midway for a break. They have hot tea and coffee available. This is also where the trail splits between the Ginza Panorama and the more challenging hike towards Mt. Yarigatake. Most hikers spend a night at the Jonen Hut. We can customize the level of difficulty to your group.

  • Chogatake Hut

Continuing on from Jonen Hut, the ensuing 6 km of trail is some of the hardest and most technical of the entire course! Starting with a steep ascent up and over Mt. Jonen, the trail consists of a lot of scree and rock hopping. Sturdy boots and hiking poles are definitely required.

Arrive to Chogatake Hut — the final mountain hut for this trek.

  • Chogatake Hut to Kamikochi Exit Point

Chogatake serves breakfast at 6:00 AM. Bento boxes are available the evening before if you'd like to depart before breakfast.

The trail starts with a steep descent from the alpine zone through the conifer forests down into the river valley below. The trail bottoms out at Tokusawa. With road access to this point, it suddenly feels like you are back in civilization with the Michikusa Shokudo serving hot coffee from 7:00 AM. From here, it is an easy walk following the Azusa River towards Kamikochi. Local monkeys can often be seen hanging out by the trail.

After lunch in Kamikochi, it is a 30-minute drive to Shirahone Onsen area. We will arrive by 2:00 PM for check in, allowing plenty of time to relax and freshen up after four days on the trails with no showers!
