Global Fund for Women: Uganda Champions Trip

Join Global Fund for Women for an extraordinary learning journey to Uganda! During this unique trip, gain inspiration and insight from leaders in the field of climate justice. Visit Global Fund for Women’s grantee partners in Uganda, Global Rights Alert and Girls for Climate Action, and meet women who are fighting for women’s and girl’s rights, changing laws and policies, and shaping the future.
Throughout the journey, you will have opportunities with your fellow travelers and Global Fund for Women’s grantees, partners, staff, and leadership to deeply explore your visions about how to create a better future for all women and girls as well as a more climate just world. Local guides and translators will facilitate a smooth journey and provide insight into the day-to-day lives of the people you will meet.

Itinerary
Day 1: Saturday, July 13
Welcome to Uganda
Welcome to Uganda, home to one of Africa’s most diverse landscapes, with volcanic mountains veiled in mist, sun-drenched savannah, and magnificent heights of snow-capped peaks.
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), you will have a VIP representative assist you through Immigrations & Customs before you collect your luggage and meet with your driver, who will transfer you to your hotel in Kampala (about one hour drive).
Take some time to settle into your hotel before coming together for an Opening Circle this afternoon to discuss the trip and everyone you can expect to meet along the way. Then visit an art exhibition to meet with the artists and discuss the face of climate (in)justice and the local movements to combat it.
In the evening, enjoy your first meal together: a Welcome Dinner to kick off the week’s journey.

Day 2: Sunday, July 14
Transfer to Hoima
After breakfast and a group meeting to review the itinerary this morning, check out from the hotel before departing to transfer to Hoima, the “Oil City” in Western Uganda. The drive is approximately 4 hours, and you will make stops along the way including lunch.
Upon arrival in Hoima, settle in and enjoy dinner with Global Fund for Women partners.

Day 3: Monday, July 15
Hoima Site Visits
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then drive to Kikuube District and split into small working groups to meet with various community members such as forest management committees, women affected by oil developments, local government leaders, and investors in the oil and gas sector.
After the meeting, drive to a neighboring town to visit with community-based monitors and forest management workers who are documenting forest activity and impacts of the oil industry. Visit with these communities and enjoy sharing lunch with them under the trees that have been planted as part of their policy reform campaigns.
Return to the hotel and enjoy free time before dinner tonight.

Day 4: Tuesday, July 16
Global Rights Alert
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before departing for today’s site visit to Global Rights Alert, which supports communities displaced by oil pipelines and women impacted by the development of the sector in this oil city. Travel to the oil rigs with the organization to learn about the infrastructure directly from the experts. The day with Global Rights Alert will include lunch and the opportunity to explore Uganda’s incredible landscapes and wildlife.
In the late afternoon, you’ll return to the hotel to freshen up before a barbecue dinner with local community members, a night primed for fireside chats and sharing folktales.

Day 5: Wednesday, July 17
Transfer to Kampala & Dinner with Traditional Dance
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then check out and depart from Hoima to transfer back to Kampala. Enjoy some free time to explore Kampala today before meeting with national actors and representatives in the early evening.
This evening, regroup for dinner at the Ndere Centre, which is also home to the traditional Ugandan dance troupe of the same name. Enjoy a performance of drumming and dancing as you share a meal with representatives from NGOs, central government, oil companies, feminists, legislators, and young activists to share information on opportunities for influencing climate action in Uganda.

Day 6: Thursday, July 18
Nile River Cruise
After breakfast, check out before departing for Jinja, approximately a 2 hour drive from Kampala. Jinja is a city on the northern shores of Lake Victoria near the source of the White Nile, one of the Nile River’s two main tributaries.
Upon arrival in Jinja, check into the hotel and settle into your room before setting out for a boat cruise on the Nile River and lunch in the afternoon.
After lunch, visit the offices of Girls for Climate Action, who work in climate smart agriculture with all-women farmer groups and a group of women trained in making energy saving stoves for rural households.
Return to the hotel for dinner this evening.

Day 7: Friday, July 19
Jinja
After breakfast, continue to explore Jinja with Girls for Climate Action. You will have another full day visit with them to learn firsthand how all-women farmer groups are supported by the organization and meet a group of women trained in making energy-saving stoves for rural households. Join community members for lunch today.
Regroup this evening for a Farewell Dinner.

Day 8: Saturday, July 20
Departures
Enjoy one last Closing Circle at breakfast this morning before returning to Kampala for individual departures from Entebbe International Airport (EBB). You will have a day room and optional lunch in Kampala today so that you can rest before your flight home.
