At Elevate Destinations, our mission is to democratize tourism and connect local youth with their surroundings as both travelers and stewards. Through our Buy a Trip, Give a Trip model, we typically create travel opportunities for local children in the communities we visit. However, we are always seeking new ways to make a positive impact.
In line with this commitment, we recently had the opportunity to support a different kind of educational experience. Earlier this year, we provided funds to help organize the Sustainable Agriculture Adaptation to Climate Change Fair and Forum. By backing initiatives like this, we aim to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices within local communities.
The Details:
In celebration of International Food Day, the Sustainable Agriculture Adaptation to Climate Change Fair and Forum brought together students, teachers, and community members. Organized by Holistica Belize and Belize Organic Family Farming, the fair attracted 107 students and 5 teachers, creating an energetic atmosphere filled with curiosity and knowledge sharing.
The event featured educational booths, arts and crafts vendors, and food stalls, all contributing to the overarching message of sustainability. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Pest Control Management staff, and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) provided valuable insights into their work and discussed the significance of International Food Day at the educational booths.
Local artisans showcased their products, highlighting the connection between sustainable agriculture and Belize’s cultural heritage. Attendees enjoyed a variety of delicious and healthy food options from vendors, promoting the consumption of locally sourced and sustainably produced food. Engaging demonstrations on bamboo irrigation, planting beds, and floating gardens showcased innovative and environmentally friendly agricultural techniques.
The Impact:
Building on the momentum of this event, the organizers are now focused on the following initiatives:
- Establishing a School Garden Project in Santa Rosa that integrates classroom activities, providing hands-on learning experiences for students.
- Assisting a family in need by providing a wood conservation stove, which will significantly reduce their reliance on firewood and contribute to environmental sustainability.
The Sustainable Agriculture Adaptation to Climate Change Fair and Forum demonstrates how local communities can unite to tackle global challenges and improve their environments. By promoting sustainable agriculture, supporting local artisans, and inspiring the next generation, Belize is making significant strides toward a more environmentally conscious future.
