MONKEY OR GORILLA TREKKING
Get an early morning start, and go the Volcanoes National Park for either monkey trekking (included) or mountain gorilla trekking (optional, additional $1500 fee for permit).
Both experiences begin with a brisk walk through the bucolic farmland that encompasses the park. Upon entry into Volcanoes National Park, the environment transforms into a whimsical bamboo forest.
Travelers who choose to go monkey trekking will navigate the level, lowland vegetation in search of golden monkeys that lounge in the rainforest canopy and hunt for bamboo shoots in the undergrowth. These cheeky monkeys are entertaining and exhilarating to watch.
Those who choose to go gorilla trekking have a longer journey ahead. Based on the location of the closest habituated gorilla family, the trek can take many hours and cover steep, and sometimes slippery, terrain. Spending an hour with a gorilla family is more than enough reward. Remarkably human in their expression and interactions, the families go about their business – grooming, feeding, and playing – in quiet acceptance of their human onlookers.
Dependent on everyone’s trekking lengths, there will be an optional visit to Red Rocks, where participants can partake in community-based tourism activities, such as banana beer brewing, basket weaving, or a village walk.
If you prefer to indulge in some relaxation or reflection, you are welcome to spend the afternoon at the serene Gorilla View Lodge.
Join a special farewell dinner and closing conversation with the group this evening.
