Your Panama Travel Guide

The Best Things to Do and See

Panama is rapidly shedding its old reputation as a haven for tax evaders and intrigue, emerging instead as one of Central America’s premier eco-travel destinations. This Panama travel guide will help you discover the country’s vibrant biodiversity, rich culture, and unforgettable adventures.

Visit Panama

Why Visit Panama?

Panama is recognized as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Home to over 1,000 species of migratory and resident birds, 205 species of frogs and amphibians, and iconic wildlife like jaguars, ocelots, deer, armadillos, and wild pigs, Panama is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, active since 1923, has played a pivotal role in protecting Panama’s national parks and wildlife reserves, many of which have thrived since their establishment in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

Travelers will find immersion in nature and a slower-paced, friendly, and truly welcoming culture—a perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life.

Best time to visit Panama

The warmth of the country is immediately palpable, both in the manner of everyone you encounter and in the actual temperature, which remains relatively consistent year-round, ranging from the 70s to the 80s Fahrenheit.

The dry season, from December to March, is followed by a prolonged “green season” from April to November, but that doesn’t mean all-day downpours—more like heavy showers in the afternoon. July and August, when most families are traveling due to school schedules, are excellent months to see humpback whales during their migration and observe nesting turtles on the coast.

Things to do in Panama

Panama is an adventurer’s playground. Popular things to do in Panama include:

  • Surfing, diving, and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters
  • Hiking through rainforests and cloud forests
  • Kayaking and river rafting on scenic waterways
  • Horseback riding along beaches and cycling mountain trails
  • Wild swimming in forest waterholes

Elevate’s Founder and President, Dominique Callimanopulos, notes that Panama excels in combining outdoor adventures:

“On my recent trip to Panama, I had the unique experience of hearing the howler monkeys in the surrounding forest while snorkeling in the ocean. In one day, I hiked in the rainforest for several hours, complete with a refreshing dip in a wild swimming hole. I returned to my surf lodge for a massage, enjoyed a sunset horseback ride along the beach, and took an evening bike ride.”

Panama’s riverways possess their own enchantment—from broad rivers shrouded in old-growth forests to silvery streams in the interior and waterfalls that surprise you during hidden hikes. You could plan an entire trip focused solely on Panama’s rivers, which sustain a myriad of birds, fish, and wildlife.

Places to visit in Panama

From Panama City, day trips to the rainforest, tribal communities, and coffee plantations are on offer. For the more intrepid, Panama offers under-the-radar destinations on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, as well as gorgeous countryside, mountains, and forests in the country’s interior.

Some of the best places to visit in Panama include:

  • Panama City and Casco Antiguo: Explore the vibrant capital’s historic heart, where colonial architecture, lively plazas, and local markets offer a taste of Panama’s rich culture and cuisine.
  • Panama Canal: Experience one of the world’s greatest engineering marvels by taking a tour and learning about the canal’s fascinating history and impact.
  • Soberania National Park: Venture into the lush rainforest for wildlife spotting—monkeys, tropical birds, and more—on guided hikes or boat tours along Gatun Lake.
  •  Chagres National Park and Embera Village: Travel by canoe to meet the Embera people, immersing yourself in their traditions, music, and crafts in a serene jungle setting.
  • Cambutal: This lesser-known region offers uncrowded surfing beaches and beautiful countryside. Great for cycling, horseback riding, and forest hikes.
  • El Valle: Cool mountain air will greet you in this region, characterized by summit views and a lively local street life in town.
  • Boquete: Nestled in the highlands, Boquete is renowned for its coffee plantations, making it an ideal destination for tours, tastings, and scenic hikes.
  • Bocas del Tor: This Caribbean archipelago is a paradise for snorkeling, kayaking, and relaxing at eco-lodges, with opportunities to visit indigenous communities and pristine beaches.

Food, glorious food

Panama offers a delightful variety of cuisine, ranging from the beloved patacones—smashed and fried plantains that pair well with almost any dish—to an array of ceviches featuring both vegetables and fish. With slowly simmered stews and delicious croquettes, Panama has become a smorgasbord for health-conscious eaters, offering innovative yet earthy cuisine.

Many chefs are increasingly adding fusion elements that incorporate traditional vegetables and herbs, drawing upon local botanical and medicinal knowledge. With a wealth of locally grown produce, meals are consistently fresh and flavorful, whether enjoyed in a Michelin-starred restaurant or a casual beachfront café. Fresh fruit is plentiful, and smoothies are a staple on every menu.

How many days in Panama?

If you’re planning your Panama itinerary and wondering how many days in Panama are ideal, aim for at least 9 to 10 days. This allows you to experience three distinct regions, each with its own climate and landscape. With more time, you can slow down, immerse yourself in local culture, and appreciate the intricacies of each area.

Accommodation options range from boutique eco-lodges and luxury resorts to family-friendly hotels and private villas, ensuring there’s something for every traveler. One of Elevate Destinations’ travel advisors can curate the right itinerary for you and your family.

Sustainable travel and giving back

Elevate Destinations partners with local teams committed to sustainability and responsible tourism. Every trip we organize contributes to impactful projects that support community welfare.

Our Buy A Trip, Give A Trip (B1G1) initiative sponsors excursions for local youth. For example, during our first B1G1 in Panama, we will facilitate a visit to the Panama Canal for Embera children, many of whom have never seen this world-famous landmark despite living nearby in the forest and being known as the “Guardians of the Panama Canal Forest.”
